ANTOLOGÍA EN ESPAÑOL

De las palabras

Son como las camisas las palabras:
a veces nos quedan demasiado grandes,
como cuando alguien te halaga, enamora;
otras, demasiado chicas,
como cuando alguien te insulta, reprocha.

A veces no compaginan sus colores
con la edad, tu tez, estación,
con la vestimenta que llevas en el interior;
otras, no resulta favorable
su material o diseño, construcción.

Son como las camisas, cortas o largas:
a veces con ellas tropezamos en la pobreza,
cuando lo que se busca es el pan;
otras, en la riqueza,
cuando ya no se valoran, respetan.

El invitado

Afuera he dejado mi yo.
Llueve, hace frío, el viento
cree que son bailarinas
paraguas, ramas y vestidos,
piensa que tiene
a su disposición una
orquesta, conductor y
peor, que goza
de un público. He
tenido que dejarle afuera.
Era un requisito,
nos costó casi una vida
para darnos cuenta de esto.
Él ha comprendido,
si no no me hubieran
dejado entrar esta vez,
conocer por fin los
adentros de mi casa.

Con un abrazo y un
cuídese, hasta luego,
nos despedimos. No
se entristezca, yo sabré
arreglármelas, me dijo.
No. Muchas gracias. Por ahora
no puedo acercarme a las ventanas.
Tengo que acostumbrarme
a estar sin él, él por igual
me imagino. Es que
nos queríamos tanto, sabe.
Quizás después
de que pase el otoño, la
primavera pueda asomarme.
Mientras tanto me es
imposible. Pues sé que él
estará por largo tiempo
rondando su casa.

La abuela

Esa hamaca que se mece
entre los plátanos
es el viento que llega
con la salvación del conuco.

En su vaivén, disimulo,
nunca llega, parte, siempre
es presencia y ausencia:
nunca se ha cansado de jugar.

Escúchale. Se mece entre
el ayer y mañana, la
tumba y el parto: secuaz
siempre del presente.

Cree que sus pasos son
las pausas, silencios,
de alguna pieza que el buen
músico jamás podría descuidar.

Dicen que es planta, animal,
fuego y cuerpo de agua,
también verbo, sujeto,
u hombre y mujer.

Mas yo también te digo
que el viento es el todo y
la nada, el triángulo amoroso
del fósforo, boca y cigarro.

Escucha. No te duermas.
Se ha caído de su cuna.
¿No te huele a mango
que cae en la noche? ¿A níspero?

No, no te asustes. No llores.
Perdóname. Es que a veces
se me quema el arroz con leche
cuando pienso en tu porvenir.

Sí, así, cierra los ojitos. El viento
no es más que el ruido de la
mecedora en la cual nos mecemos.
No le hagas caso a esta vieja.

ANTOLOGÍA EN INGLÉS

Buying Roses

Buying roses for you
I thought about my loved ones
in the cemetery too far for me to visit,
I thought about red, then white.
It was about that time of day
when the sky takes center stage,
when a pianist, compatriot, seemed
just to be playing for me.

Walking then through the remains
of the hardened snow, I felt
happy and sad, responsible
and free, carrying your gift: the
ever-presentness of the eternal
in the transient. I felt rooted, lost,
empty and full: the flower shop smelling
of you and lands faraway from me.

That day, nearing our residence,
winter gave way to spring
and the sky returned to its backdrop,
restoring the position of Earth
along with our lives: roses in cemeteries,
people buried in gardens, fields of corn,
and in between—you, me, us,
those that push the snow to the side.

La noche

At night country, city, disappear,
seas bring to us the heavens,
winds other forms, ways of life,
and the all-encompassing sun
disguises itself as the moon,
other stars.

The Man by the Window

To catch me, you don’t need to be a fisherman
nor be acquainted with the art of setting traps
for all sorts of birds, wildlife, you
don’t need to resort to a private eye or
metal detector.

If you’re interested, I am just that person
looking at the world from a window,
sipping coffee, water, other times wine,
whisky or cognac, at times
identifying with what’s out there, thus
speaking and going for a walk with a friend,
to a movie, baseball game, or something else,
while other times I encounter difficulties,
thus keeping to myself.

You don’t need any device, either natural
or artificial. You just need to look up
and I’ll be there, still standing by the window,
waiting to see if either one of us waves, smiles.
You just need to look up.

Landscape

What’s away, farther still, the first things we see:
the sky, windmills, the dancing of birds;
distances presented in a light manner
as if reachable, worth desiring, going after.

What’s near, closer still, the last things:
boats, people, a flag, pieces of land;
vicinities presented in black strokes, brown,
darkness gazing at light in a friendly manner.

To Impress You

To impress you
should I say that on my better days
I resemble a peasant tilling the land?

That while doing so twenty something years ago
I couldn’t wait to clean my hands,
but that today I wish
I would have taken longer to do so?

That what I have given, conceded,
pales in comparison
to what I have taken, received?

That on my worst days
(the rule not the exception)
I have squandered the opportunity
to call a friend, tell you that I care?

Should I look up and cry out
Eureka! Eureka! and while digging my grave
take the summer to unwind close by the sea?
